What is Social-Emotional Learning?

ā€œSEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. ~ CASEL

Social-emotional learning matters

Having strong social-emotional competencies helps your child develop personal effectiveness. In todayā€™s ever changing world, such soft skills gives children the tools to navigate current and future real-world challenges. SEL goes beyond improving a childā€™s school performance, itā€™s a life skill, itā€™s about recognising and managing oneā€™s emotions, develop healthy identities, build meaningful relationships, act for the good of self, others and society.

The 5 competencies of SEL: Self-awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision Making.

Mindfulness & Social-Emotional Learning

Mindfulness and Social-emotional learning (SEL) are the foundations of our core values and vision.

Mindfulness & SEL is not just a programme or method, but rather coordinating framework embedded into our centreā€™s values and culture. Our hope is to help our children develop attitudes and behaviours to promote health and psychological growth over their lifespan.

Practicing mindfulness allow us to be fully present in our life and work, and improve our quality of life.

Mindfulness practice is a way of paying attention to, and seeing clearly all that are happening in our lives. It helps us to recognise and step away from our habitual, unconscious emotional and physiological reactions to everyday events. This helps us to respond to life in a calmer manner, cultivating clarity, insight and understanding.

The Benefits of Mindfulness Practice

This skill to focus oneā€™s attention in the direction of oneā€™s own intention helps to engage volition and will power. Overtime, one will also develop better self-awareness and understand the habits of their mind.

Some of the benefits are:

  • Recognise, slow down or stop automatic and habitual reactions.
  • Respond more effectively to complex or difficult situations.
  • AssessĀ situations more clearly
  • Become more creative
  • Achieve balance and resilience at work and at home
Mindfulness Isn't
ā€œMindfulness is paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.ā€ ~ Jon Kabit-Zinn

Who is Mindfulness for?

Mindfulness practice is for everyone from all walks of life, children and adults. There is no religious component to mindfulness practice. Regardless of oneā€™s beliefs or faith, one can enjoy the benefits of being mindful.

OBJECTIVES:

At its simplest,Ā PawsĀ bĀ andĀ .bĀ is an awareness-raising exercise to give all individualsĀ a taste ofĀ mindfulness so that they know about it and can return to it later in life if they choose to.

However, for many people, the course can lead to immediate and striking results:

  • improve self-regulation and awareness
  • getting along better with others
  • able toĀ concentrate and learn better
  • able toĀ cope with stress and anxiety more efficiently
  • feelingĀ happier, calmer and more fulfilled
